Biography

James (Jimmy) Burg practices with the firm’s Commercial Litigation Group. His practice covers British Columbia, Alberta, and federal matters, regularly practicing out of our Vancouver and Surrey offices. On the Advocacy side, Jimmy enjoys a general litigation practice encompassing a broad range of civil and contractual disputes, corporate commercial litigation, real estate, construction, professional liability, employment law, arbitration, and public law matters. His litigation practice includes the following experience:

  • Real estate disputes including failed closings, fraud and misrepresentation of defects, certificates of pending litigation, and ownership disputes.
  • Corporate governance and shareholder disputes including director and officer liability, oppression claims and derivative actions, fraud and conspiracy, partnership and joint venture disputes, and securities issues.
  • Debt collection related to loan agreements, promissory notes, and unpaid invoices.
    Construction law issues including cost overruns, delay, and builder’s liens.
  • First Nations advocacy including governance matters, administration and business matters, fiduciary duties of bands and band councilors, and conflicts of interest rules.

 

Complementing his broader litigation practice, Jimmy is building experience in natural resources, energy, and regulatory matters. His recent work includes:

  • Regulatory matters in renewables, clean energy technology, and hydrogen
  • Strategic advice and representation to mining companies
  • Regulatory matters in electric and autonomous vehicles
  • Environmental and energy-related litigation
  • Climate policy and related litigation
  • Public utility matters
  • Quasi-criminal liability and environmental prosecutions
  • Risk management and environmental regulatory compliance

 

During law school at Queen’s University, Jimmy received academic excellence awards in trial advocacy and international trade law. He provided legal services to the Mohawk Nation at Akwesasne in the regulation of its tobacco industry and the corresponding constitutional, transportation, criminal, and international implications. He also worked for Queen’s Legal Aid, where he represented clients in a variety of landlord-tenant disputes, criminal matters and judgement enforcements.

Prior to law school, Jimmy received a Bachelor of Earth Sciences from Dalhousie University and worked as a geologist and environmental scientist in the mining, oil & gas, and environmental sectors of British Columbia and Alberta.

Jimmy’s natural advocacy skills and technical background allow him to act both as a strong litigator and as an effective regulatory counsel in complex environmental, mineral, oil and gas, energy, and Indigenous matters.
